Employees prefer a more flexible workplace approach over a pay rise
Occupational health providers have a particular role in working with individuals who are experiencing problems associated with work related stress and helping them either to remain at work or return to work successfully. Work related stress develops when a person is unable to cope with the demands being placed on them at work and can present in many different ways. It can be a significant cause of illness and is known to be linked with high levels of sickness absence, staff turnover and other issues such as more errors.
It is therefore important that Employers look at ways to reduce such pressures and demands on their employees and it is interesting to read from this article that over a third of employees would prefer a more flexible approach to working hours than a 3% pay rise. This says a lot about the pressures people feel, not only whilst juggling work with family commitments but also with commuting to work during the core times. This article confirms that other key points to engage staff and make staff feel happier is simply to say thank you, involve employees in decisions, and give staff responsibility over their work.
